I learned a lot of things about the real world of career exploration and the experience was very helpful in me that it boost up my confidence in facing the world outside the university.

The very goal of the career workshop is to help individuals develop the skills that they need to achieve their career objectives. The workshop was divided into four modules:

MY GOALS
This unit helps us evaluate our talents, interests, and values; set goals; and develop a plan to achieve those goals. This individual plan can include goals for employment, education or self-employment.

MY RESOURCES
This unit helps us learn how to identify and develop the resources we need to reach our goals. It teaches us how to find employment leads, educational and self-employment funding, and other community services.

MY INTERACTION WITH RESOURCES
This unit helps us learn how to communicate with the resources we identified. It teaches us to make powerful impressions in interviews and present ourselves well in writing.

MY CONTINUED SUCCESS
This unit teaches us how to negotiate, grow in your position, and advance in your career.

Twenty-One

I realize one thing… I have been living in this world for 21 years and yet I can’t even enumerate 10 special things that I have accomplished as to be considered as one of the asset to this world.

Last May 09, 2009 I celebrated my 21st birthday. I was grateful enough ‘coz my loved ones (friends, family, classmates) greeted me on that special day. I could not express how happy I am to receive a hug or even a simple text message from them. My only wish for that is for me and my family to be happy and strong always.

There are 21 things that I could enumerate; these are things or the people that have played a big role in my 21 years of being alive:

21 – cellphone
20 – clothes
19 – laptop
18 – crushes
17 – school
16 – teachers / bind!”… I thought before that we will have another INC grade for this semester but teamwork and dedication prove it wrong…

I would like to acknowledge my groupmates… Ms. Gonzales, Ms. Gorgonio and Ms. Montejo who have had very high fighting spirit and dedication to our work and also my apologies for being rude sometimes for having you guyz always on a group meeting…
To Mr. RSG who always enlighten us and keeping us always on the right track… thank you so much sir…

Of course, great thanks to God who gave us the wisdom and courage to never give up and always giving us good health despite those consecutive sleepless nights and very long walks…

Now, is just the beginning of another long journey… we type='text'>lessons from downfalls

Way back three or four months ago, when Mrs. Rogers has been replaced by Mr. Gamboa as our instructor in the subject Systems Analysis and Design 1, I knew already that I will experience another difficult chapter of my life (doomsday!!!). The orientation was quite short and the lecture time took us only one day to finish the whole reference book, amazing isn’t it? But then, I wasn’t so surprise by this kind of teaching method of Mr. RSG… what shocked me the most was the major paper outline given to us to accomplish or to submit with in the span of only three months… looking and thinking of that outline before gives me a super duper headache.

After almost over two months of constructing our major paper, I am so happy to see the development of the different areas of my life. The face to face consultations with Mr. RSG is the most exciting and breathe taking part of this, but this is the part where I learned so much, not just by making or constructing a SAD research paper but the face to face consultation is molding us to become a great soon-to-be Systems Analyst. I realized that, personal experience and real life downfalls are very good factors for us to learn on how to become a good Systems Analyst.

Another part of me that was developed with this activity is my ability to collaborate and cooperate with the team. Mostly, in all the things I do, I love to do it on my own, I don’t want others meddling with my work same is true that I don’t want to blame anybody for my failure. But with this activity (SAD proposal submission/consultation), I learned how important it is to work with the team, how workloads are lessen when you have your teammates, how comforting it is to know that you have teammates who believes in you and trust you as a leader, and you have your teammates with you who will fight ‘till the end of the battle.

Honestly, though sometimes we have been into small fights, I am so happy knowing that we are one in this project;

We think as one.
We work as one.
We fight as one.

Group Collaboration

February 16, 2009 we had a group discussion about the proposed integrated system that will be collaborated by seven subsystems with the parent system the so-called USEP site map system.
Here listed below are the eight systems that will be integrated:
(Systems rolled into one)
• Campus site map system
- This system will look like a panorama of the university with additional feature of a daily time record of the USEP students.

• freeExpress system
- This system will involve any literary documents, concerns, announcements. It serves like an online freedom board of the USEP students

• instructor’s Scheduler
- this system will be a schedule tracker of all the USEP instructors

• Scholarship renewal
- This system will involve an online scholarship renewal of all the scholars here in the university

• Service online system
- This is our proposed system. This concerns all students service providers here in the university. But this system is delimited only on tutorial services.

• Usep alumnay system
- This tracks all the graduate students of the university by batch.

• Usep organization (academic)
- This will involve all the academic organizations here in the university.

• Usep organization (non-academic)
- This will involve all the non-academic organizations here in the university.

During the meeting, there were problems that were raised by each other’s group by which only known during the meeting. The feasibility of the project as an integrated system is of high risk. Considering our knowledge on web based applications, the time frame to develop the integrated system and of course the cost of implementation somehow makes this project “vain”.

I do not know the possibilities that will happen in the future, but I’m quite sure that if we (all the proponents) are very determined to be a part of this project, then we could make this project feasible given the span of time, but we are not promising that we could finish the project as what our instructor, maybe, had expected it to be. We hope for our instructors’ kind consideration and understanding whatever we could accomplish.

Technology In the Future

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 127px; height: 85px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SZQplgky7gI/AAAAAAAAARI/aAmHhqHGL1A/s320/images4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301908385698082306" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 98px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SZQpk-NpWMI/AAAAAAAAARA/hpYTcyNd57o/s320/images3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301908376474179778" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 110px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SZQpkudcF7I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/NxBavXRu99U/s320/images2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301908372245452722" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 82px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SZQpjmugMnI/AAAAAAAAAQw/UlY40ZDjzUU/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301908352989672050" />

February 10, 2009 marks a very important event in the history of Institute of Computing here in University Of Southeastern Philippines, the presentation of how will be technology in the future. The event is an annual episode that was conducted by graduating Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science students here in USEP.

INFORMATIVE
The presentation was very informative for me, since all the participating groups presented the past, present and the future of their respective field of interest in technological advancement. Some presented the scientific revolution of agriculture, aircraft, telephone, medicine, video games console, chatting, books and even waste management.

Innovative
I am so proud that all of the presenters are my friends and classmates; they all have a very extravagant idea on how they foresee the future. I congratulate them all for giving such great effort; I knew they spent sleepless nights for that presentation alone.

Simulation
It could have been more interesting if all the video presentations for the future of their technologies were simulated.
Here is the list of all the Presentation:

Video Games Console
Wearable computers
Chatting Technology
Aircraft Technology
Farming Technology
Book technology
Clock technology
Waste management technology
Telephone technology
Medical technology
Charger Technology

I hope that if fate will allow us… we might as well present remarkable ideas like what they did or even better.

Great Job guyz!

student software development project... Risks Encountered!!!

in software development projects there are risks, problems that one must have to encounter.. below are some of the problems that my groupmates and i had encountered in developing a software...

• Group Coordination and Cooperation
Most of the projects we encounter are all group work. And team cooperation is very important. It can’t be avoided sometimes that there are misunderstanding between the team members which causes the project development slow down.

• Lack of resources
Being involved in a software development project, it is very important to have a personal computer in working with the project, without this (PC), may slow down the development process.

• Budgeting
It’s hard to go on group meetings, if you don’t have a fare for transportation. Also a food for snacks… (hehehe)

• Miscommunication between the Professor and the student
Sometimes, we do project which is far from what is required by the instructor. Changing the requirement will surely make the project late.

• The project is technically difficult
Being not a very good programmer and requirement analyst, the coding part of the project is a very crucial area in accomplishing the project.

• Time scheduling
Sometimes, we often rush things up… if the deadline is still far, we usually just feel at is, time pressure gives us the adrenaline sometimes to work on the project.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bloggerkristine.blogspot.com/2009/02/student-software-development-project.html' title='student software development project... (that was quite informative to me!.. hehehe,.. i was somehow enlightened) they also told me , how will their system run and i also explained to them how our system functions. hmm... the conversation was quite nice... Now, i could say that we are progressing.. hehehe.. that's why i'm writing this now.. another important event..

we are currently working on the next phase.. Analysis Phase... we will have a meeting tomorrow (February 3,2009) for all the information we gathered last week... and hope we are not running out of time.. may God guide us always..

In-Source Vs. Out-sourcing

Since, I am not a real-time organization owner as of now; most probably my answer would change at any time in the near future (hehehe). If I am an owner of a company I would really utilize and use all the talents, skills, and capabilities of my employees that would mean I am really in favor of an in-housing. Of course, there are some considerations in deciding as to in-source or outsource.

As what I have always been saying, I really want to become a systems analyst someday, and so, I have read a statement saying that “the more an analyst knows about how an organization works, the more effective he can be”,… and so I could say, that if one organization is planning or choosing whether to in-source or outsource especially if it involves a complete renovation of the organization in-sourcing is the best way. Since, employees working for that organization are already familiar with all the organization’s transactions.

Well, if an organization has limited number of employees and in-housing a job would cause TOO much delayed for the operation of the business, then better choose outsourcing. Also, if the business is quite big, that it operates world-wide, then outsourcing job is very much applicable (call center companies).

In the case of USEP, I would not recommend outsourcing. Why? Let me focus my answer to the case of Mr. Cagape and Mrs. Mercado. Before, the university has been paying P75, 000 (I don’t know if the figure is exact) every month for a system made by a third-party company. And I think, that figure is quite big enough and a pain in the pocket for the university.

Why the need to pay for that big amount, if the university itself could make their own system?

What’s with the vision, mission, goals and objectives if the university itself is paying for a technology made by a third party company? Isn’t that an insult or a degradation of honor?

It would be the pride and honor of the programmer but still, a part of the university is given a credit. As one said , “ it takes years of experience working for a company to really understand what is going on”.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bloggerkristine.blogspot.com/2009/02/in-source-vs-out-sourcing.html' title='In-Source Vs. In the completion and approval (which I received last January 14, 2009) of my proposal I encountered so many problems and even reach to a point that I even doubt my own capability and feel shame for being stupid, but then because of faith (to God, Professor and self), dedication (will to finish), inspiration (family), hardwork (tears and sweat) and pressure (classmates… Hehehe!) I surpass all those trials making me a better person and a competent IC student. Now, I could really affirm what Rene Descartes said “It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well”.

Faculty Evaluation
Many professor of this Institution had said “we are not teachers but rather instructor”, I could really justify that it is really true. What we learn academically through the span of 4 or 5 years of residence in this university would be 30% from instructor and 70% self exploration. But one faculty withstand them all, our Prof. in CS research let us suffer and tortured our mind so much. We suffered intellectually and even emotionally. But with his high expectation and belief in us we learn to explore the more complicated world of Information science. He never taught us anything but rather enlightened us everything. By rejecting our garbage proposals we slowly understand what our subject really is for. What Methods of Research really is.
Classmate Evaluation
My classmates really had never helped me but rather be said they pressured me to finish the project. They did nothing and say nothing but I saw everything. I saw how hardworking they were, how they have work so hard just to comply there requirements on time. Even though, they didn’t care about me finishing my proposal I was pressure to really finish it, and I thank them for that. My classmates really are the intellectual giants of this university.

Subject Evaluation
CS Research Method left a marked on my hypothalamus. This is the subject, so far, which tormented my mind at its highest point (not only mine but also for my classmates). Three rejections of proposal made my mind whirl (I can’t and will never ever forget that experience). But with those sufferings we learn so much about this subject, that in conducting a research, it is very essential to pay more attention on the methodologies that will be injected on the study. Hmm… I guess it was not the subject that was hard to understand, but the professor who displays high standard on the subject requirements.

Change for the better…

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 114px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SWyUVKLy9qI/AAAAAAAAAO0/ec0CSZIvBys/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290766753485485730" />
I firmly believe and admire what Peter Drucker stated; “To make knowledge productive… requires the systematic exploitation of opportunities for change”.

This afternoon we had the seldom chance to talk face to face with our professor in our Systems Analysis and Design 1 subject to have a consultation with our proposal. As expected, every time I had the chance to chat with him I learn something new, something that is worth to ponder of. I appreciate it every time he praises us (as his students), and believe on what we could do. Yes, of course we definitely know that our proposal is not that very worthy to be said as an outstanding project for us as IT students of USEP.

We are expected of course to venture and utilize what technology could really bring to people and how technology could really help people. We as the proponents deeply know that by proposing that kind of project would not make any change for us, we would still be the same as we are during fresh years in the university. Now, in order for us to learn something much better and in order for us to grow and get out from our shells, we need to think and think and think…

What do I Prefer?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SWi8iDFiZkI/AAAAAAAAAOs/DuZYu0WwJf0/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289685055476753986" />
We were task on our system analysis and design subject to evaluate our personality type on which of the four data gathering techniques we are much comfortable: Interview, observe, review documents or make questionnaires. And so, below is my evaluation:
Personality type
I don’t like to talk much. I love listening instead. (Interviewing)
I don’t like much mingling with people but instead I love observing diverse humanity. (Observation)
I don’t like to study but I definitely very fond of reading. Reading something makes me feel I’m human. Information is what I love the most. (Document review)
I love to write down queries boggling my mind. (Questionnaire)
Ranking
1. Interviewing (most comfortable!)
Considering my personality, I really don’t like to talk so much. I feel very tired of talking; it’s as if taking my breath away whenever I talk for a long time (honest!), but whenever I am task to talk for a period of time, I give my full 100% energy to it (for example in reporting). But on the contrary I really love to listen sensible talks. Whenever I am interested on someone’s idea I give my whole attention to him or her.

In data gathering, I’m pretty much comfortable on interviewing someone for the sake of gathering information because I think if you have the chance to talk to a person face to face you can have the most relevant answer and in interview technique I think you can get more information.

2. Observation (comfortable!)
I am the type of person who would rather choose to be a flower on the wall rather than to dance on a ball. Yes. I mostly stay away from crowd. It whirls my mind whenever I bump into bunch of people. But on the contrary of it, I love to observe people. I love to watch different kinds of human beings doing something, observing what they are doing and criticize them on my mind. (Hahaha… so whenever you caught me staring at you, beware I have something in my mind you would probably be interested to know)

3. Document review (I could give a try!)
I love reading. In reading related and important documents, I can gain relevant information.
4. Questionnaire (my last preference!)
I love jotting down queries every time it pops up my mind and later look some answers for it.

So, basically base on the above ranking I don’t prefer only one data gathering technique, and also I have my likes and dislikes for the individual techniques. That is why I could say all of the techniques are quite very important in data gathering.

my Personal Development life Cycle

SDLC Model.
As we already know, this is the model were system developer follow or use in doing a system. Of course the main goal of a developer is to come up with a good system that satisfies the customer or user. Now, if I will come up with my own SDLC model, I will call it the” cycle approach”, meaning it never ends. And sure thing, this model will help me make a path towards my objective in life.

Setting up Goals
This is the stage where I will set up my goals, my objectives in life.
• What I want to achieve?
• Where I want to be years from now?
Ex. I want to be a systems analyst someday.

Analysis
This is the stage where I try to ponder what my priorities in life are. This is where I rank my objectives and goals.
• What should come first?
• Can I attain this goal/s?
• Am I capable of doing it?
Ex. Am I capable to be a systems analyst? Hmm… of course I am! You’re an IT student and you are thought how to become one. Go! Kristine you can do it.

Planning
This is the stage where I formulate some alternative solutions on how I will attain my objectives in life. This will be composed of some actions.
• What if I take this solution?
• What should be the possible step?
Ex. If you want to become an accountant someday, take BSA.
If you want to become an engineer someday, take engineering courses.
If you want to become an IT specialist, take BSIT, BSCS, BSCOe.
Implementation
This stage is the part where I perform all the possible solutions I planned in the planning stage. If failures come across, take it as a lesson and an experience and go back to the planning stage and plan for another possible solution.

Maintain
Well, if everything goes well on the previous stages and I have reached my objective , try to maintain and enjoy the success and as human as I am try to improve and go back to the first stage where I set again some goals for improvement.

Predictive or Adaptive Approach?
I am the type of person who never chooses one. I’d rather chose both out of the two choices or three out of the five choices. So, if I am to choose between predictive or adaptive, I would say both. Of course I use to plan what I want to achieve and what will I do in the future. I plan something for myself and for the people around me, for me to become a very successful professional woman, and to build a house with a very wide garden of flowers near the sea for my parents. Also I use the adaptive approach for me to be flexible enough in coping with different hindrances that might come across.
Birth is the Remedy for death.

Life Cycle

The day ended to me so well. While writing this one I am now quite certain of one thing, the path I am taking right now is leading me to somewhere I somehow dream to be in. Today is the school’s intramurals and yet we are having a whole day class (sharing???), hahaha… anyway it doesn’t matter to me at all; I’m not quite interested on diving unto the crowd (glad I am not a sport enthusiast).

The first “preacher” in the class today had kept on repeating about life-cycle; meaning the birth and death of something. But I would just like to contradict with his statement since I do believe that when you say cycle it is a repeated events in which there has no ending; no death. Yes of course there is a beginning but it never ends. I think a great example that we could conceptualize for a life cycle is the interaction between the plant and human beings. Plants emit oxygen in order for us human beings to live, and as an exchange for that we emit carbon dioxide in order for the plants to live, and the process continues. So, that’s what life cycle for me, it never stops.

Software Development Life Cycle

Again and again when SDLC is mentioned, of course the very first thing that would come up into my mind is the “waterfall” approach of software development. It is very easy to understand since in the real world a water, falling never comes back to the top to fall again. Same as with the approach after finishing a step you’ll go on with the other step, never going back to the previous step.
So, I think again it contradicts with the way I understand a cycle. Well glad to know that there is a modified waterfall approach in which somehow when a process is done you still have the chance to go back to the previous step to conduct again the process, if ever it doesn’t satisfy your desired output.

All about our Proposal

It is really hard to please Engr. Randy S. Gamboa (our instructor in our SAD, subject), but I still believe in the good side of his intention why he is so strict about many things. Well, despite of his big objection about our proposal I would still prefer to continue what we just have proposed eventhough he keeps on “special mentioning” about the BARANGAY SYSTEM. I know it is really not a good area to conduct and practice our ability as IT students but due to lack of time and knowledge constraints we will still stick to what we proposed.
I dream of becoming an analyst and so right now is the greatest time to somehow know something about becoming one. From capturing the requirements, defining the problem, analysis and designing and so on. Well, proposing another TPS is never such a good idea to sir since there is nothing new about it. But somehow for me, as a novice it is never easy to do such thing.

Well, as has been said in the discussion this morning. As an improvement to somehow make our system capable to be called as “a good system” Engr. Gamboa suggested to make our system Web ready, I know it will be very hard but then I’m still looking for the bright side of it since I will now be forced to really learn another new feature of technology. Web based applications.

Strategic planning

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 100px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SUZynQKuzAI/AAAAAAAAAOA/zl-kv-RWC2E/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280033631818927106" />
It has been a very long day for me. I woke up 7 in the morning and hurried up to take my bath because I know the person who awaits me there at school is someone who is very particular of time scheduling (that’s why I admire him for that). When I came to the school and to our laboratory, well… I’m late and I’m glad that he doesn’t have his tantrums today; he’s in his good mood though sad to say he has a cough (tears!!!).

The class is expected to start at 8am and will finish at 5 in the afternoon (purely reporting and partly sharing). Well, I did not expect that today’s discussion will give so much impact to me. I was never been tired of listening but rather tired of sitting down. I don’t know but I did just love the topics that were presented.
We as an individual have different visions in life. We dream big, high and even impossible to achieve, that’s how should we envision something. Before, being a novice in this school I never had a plan of my life, I just go with the flow… wherever life takes me. It’s just recently that I was awaken from my stupidity of living life without a purpose or a vision. It just happen this semester that I then have a clear insights on what I really want in the future, who I want to be in the near future. We think therefore we exist, a statement from Rene des Cartes a great philosopher and mathematician. We exist for our mission in life, a mission to reach and achieve our visions. People doesn’t have any contentment in life therefore dreaming for something never stops until such time that we can’t be able to think, we can’t be able to breath, our heart stops to beat. In envisioning something we of course do planning and the best way to plan is to do it strategically.

I believe that the person who I am referring from the very beginning of this post love us so much that he doesn’t want us to plan just to fail in the future. Honestly, his sermons every time we have a meeting have a “flesh” something that is worth being kept. I firmly believe, eventhough he just keeps on discouraging us, he is still making us learn how to fight, how to hold on and how to believe in our own strength and know our vulnerabilities. Thank you sir.

Who has the knowledge has the power. Who has the information… rules!

It is not what you want, but it’s what you need.

women vs. men

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-SNRaMvvv9s/SUTbFun6vUI/AAAAAAAAAN4/EIphHkrcI4s/s320/men-vs-women.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279585554646351170" />
Why do majority of men and women think differently?

They see things on other ways… is it the chromosomes? Long term planning is not my usual habit. I do most likely short term planning, a day to day planning. Before I go to school I planned on what to wear, what to say, what to act in front of my friends… Hehe (am I supposed to do that? Haha... I don’t think so). I do mostly planned on how and where to allocate my weekly budget… for food, print outs, paperwork and etc. and most likely I do plan on finishing my sweet agony in this university (I don’t mean it that much). But planning where will I be ten years from now? Hmm… it’s quite unusual.

To think of it, it is quite a long journey to take before that year to come and to be honest I can’t imagine how old I am at that point in time, 30? (I don’t think I’m that old enough to be called as grandmother… am I..? hehe) will I still be lucky enough to still be breathing at that time? What could have the world look like in 2018? Will there be flying motorcycle? Will there be flying highways? (so absurd, but still it confuses me a lot) so many questions that are destined to be answered 10 years from now. How about me? Am I flying also? (oh I wish Edward Cullen will be there to let me do the “superwoman” thing.. hehe) . Am I heading to where I must go? Am I taking the rightful initial steps right now to be on that place where I want to be? Am I planning my road getting there? Am I not lost now? Questions on my mind, craving for answers.

“Forever begins now”, a three-word quote yet it marveled my curiosity, will it take forever for me to find the answers to the millions of questions I have in mind? Though I know for a fact that it may take longer for me to figure out what will I be in the future life, I am still confident enough that I have started my long voyage of unending search for answers long time ago. Will I have to tell you the story? I think I should… in here you’ll know how everything started…

Once upon a time…

When I had graduated my secondary education, even before I have planned or rather be said dreamed to become a CPA Lawyer. Well then, I even managed to read and enthusiastically understood everything about the bylaws of this country… Philippines. I love reading books, anything that caught my interest will surely do to me, and nothing in particular is my favorite. But, everything changes when by chance or by luck I happen to pass the entrance examination in the institution where I am now... University Of Southeastern Philippines. It was then at that time that the cursed has started. And suddenly everything that was supposed to happen and was not expected to happen changes everything about me. The detour of my life was unfolded. And without a blink of an eye I was then a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student of this prestigious and well admired school that was when my new life started, a life that I had never imagined nor thought of ever. I don’t know what was on my mind why I took up this course, or rather chose this university (well the very low tuition fee plus the name of the school… its inviting) was it just a dictation of somebody? or maybe I was just some kind of a fool at that time (JOKE!) ? Questions left unanswered not until when I had this chance of reading a school brochure of a school in our place in Digos , place on it the different career opportunities that are offered for the several courses they are offering, and well of course I bumped up browsing what would be the possible career as an IT graduate will I be? Among the several opportunities that were mentioned I was or rather it caught my wild interest on the two words that were laid on that page: Systems Analyst. At that very point in time I then knew at that time it was my calling. I just don’t know but it just happen I then had this not so very ordinary courage of thoughts that somehow I am walking through the right path.
Systems Analyst, before (even until now) sounded so very good to me eventhough I don’t have the slightest idea how will the job look like, how will the work works. It sounded like a career belonging to the elite society a career for great minds. I may have sound so ambitious but I still will shout what my heart really fells and want. As soon to be IT professional I’m focusing unto the light I have built on years ago, the light that will continually be lighted as long as my courage and dedication will not fade away (I’m starting to be so dramatic this time) . How will I get there? Do I have to bring sword and shield with me in fighting the many possible encounters in the future? If I do… is my sword sharpened enough to kill monstrous challenges?

I merely know for a fact that reaching my dream is not that easy, especially if I am not that competent enough to hold the job. So what are my preparations? What are my possible alternatives to reach my dream? Hmm… being still a student of this university I am well aware of my responsibility as well as limitations as a student. I’m quite sure that, though not well enough, the university specifically the Institute of Computing faculty and staff are doing their best effort to give us the appropriate education to be competent in the outside world.
We the student of Institute of Computing are very much aware of the shortage of the “ancient” facilities of IC, and I guess that alone is enough reason for us to question ourselves, are we ready to face the IT industry? Is four years, five years, six years in IC enough for us to be worthy enough to be called us IT professionals? The moment I am writing this one I am so tired very, very tired, that I can’t anymore think on what to say next after the next line. But still I keep on moving on. Why? Because I am so afraid that I can’t reach the required number of words. I just keep on thinking that this writing will help me lead to my dreams. How? By merely aiming for those 3000 words I just keep on moving forward. So what’s the point? Here in institute of computing though it is quite very hard to move on and keep moving forward still we are getting so much strength, patience, hard work, perseverance in meeting the bombarded requirements to us and of course as a student we are very much obliged to meet all of that though we are not forced to. It’s very hard to think on how and when will I graduate here in the university, it seems like I’m stuck in here forever. But still I do have plans after if ever possible I will graduate here in this college. So what are those plans?

First Step:
I think I already have taken up the first step towards my goal, and that’s when the time I enrolled here in the university. Right now we as IT students in the university are trained to do everything on our own (though not at all but most of the times). They, the faculty are not trying to spoon-feed us with everything that we have to learn about the outside world. We do it on our own. They somehow are training us to be strong enough to face and accept our failures. By not quitting and still holding on to the course they are trying to inculcate in our minds that whenever challenges and failures came don’t ever give up, instead learn from the mistakes and try not to do it again. I know and still believe that though they are not showing it to us; they still wish us the best of everything and probably love us by failing us in our subjects (how sad what love really means…).
Well, as to evaluate myself this time I’m doing great I could say. At least this time I’m quite sure enough that I have my own path to follow and that I’m accepting failures wholeheartedly thinking of the positive outlook of life… be optimistic!.

Second Step:

On this stage, I’m on the early stage of my celebration that I have pass all those scorching sleepless nights in IC. And most probably this would the years between 2010-2012. And on these possible years I might be working on an IT company as an IT specialist dealing with small projects only. As an early graduate I would expect that. Who would give you big projects if you still don’t have any experience on it? Right? For these years I’m quite sure enough that I have save enough money to proceed to the next step towards my goal.

Third Step:

Well, I am planning to take a masters degree on Information systems outside the country. Why? We all know that advanced technologies and teachings about information systems are well integrated outside the country. I will study hard and concentrate on how to develop and enhance my knowledge about what Information Technology is. And while in there, I will also try to apply my skills on the industries where it could further develop me and make me a great Systems Analyst. It would probably take me five years to the training and transformation of my skills, so that would be between the years of 2012-2017.

Fourth Step:

This time I’m back to the Philippines, the country where I belong. As an experienced IT woman and well profiled individual who has done several studies outside the country dealing with all the different advance technology I could probably be competent and brave enough to work on big companies as a well respected systems analyst. And that would be in the year 2018. A year of my triumphant victory (I hope so!). The year ten years from now.

Reaching For the Top

Way back 4 years ago when I took up this course Bachelor of Science in Information Technology I had the chance to read a school brochure saying that one of the career opportunities offered to an IT graduate is to become a Systems Analyst, I then dream at that time to become one.

Why??? Simply hearing the word Systems Analyst makes my heart beat so fast that it sounds like a very rare career that not anyone are given the chance to become one. I then expect at that time that if you will want to become a Systems Analyst you need to be very good in Programming, manipulating databases and the likes. But then, when I had the chance to read this certain book explaining the very role of a Systems Analyst in a company, Wow! I was quite bewildered since what I thought it was is far more different from the really meaning of it. Systems Analyst is far more than just a programmer; they are a business professional who uses analysis and design techniques to solve business problems using Information Technology.

Hmm... Though it’s far from what I expect it to be, I still dream that one day I’ll be on that pedestal fulfilling that dream.

My Own FOSS Perspective

To be able for one to cope up with the fast pacing world of information and communication technology is such a big challenge. If we try to recall the progression of evolution of human minds, it would be a big OH! Hence it is undeniably true that many developers nowadays are working and giving out such brilliant ideas, introducing new technology which would definitely leave no trace of the history and kisses the new world of the future.

On my early childhood, it never came into my mind that there is an existing competition of different technologies, be it software, operating system and etc., all I care about was to utilize what is the available resources that I could use in order for me to make word documents, presentations and etc. and to be honest, in our school during that time, Microsoft office was embraced. The existence of Free and Open Source Software was never introduced and was never known.

It is an excellent experience to be able to share ideas with some other people. Since, through online discussion one can be able to express there understanding without any hesitation and by giving resources or sharing resources we have come up to establish coherence on the subject matter. I think this is same as true with the main goal of FOSS to be able to show and share one idea and communicate with other brilliant minds in order to establish a very strong ICT community.

Understanding the definition and the real sense of FOSS is not that easy for people who have rudimentary knowledge about what is going on in the real world of economic technology. I think all of these present and unending (I think!) competition between proprietary and non-proprietary products is just a part of the growing ICT community. This said competition, I think does exist in order to bring out the best in every programmers or developers side. The main point is that, they are able to develop and improve new technologies to give mankind an easy living.

When I was able to attend a seminar (Software Freedom Day held at UM Matina), I happened to witness a group (DabaweGNU) of brilliant people promoting the advantages and benefits that we can get if we are going to practice to use FOSS. Yes, that was quite a remarkable experience since I got the chance to see how FOSS has been used in the real world of IT industry, how it has been so useful in the developing ICT community since contribution of different ideas of individuals are placed in one project without being dictated on what to do, they work on their own and they for themselves get that satisfaction and excellence for being able to contribute in developing new project.

FOSS with the aid of open standards has been a great commodity to many users since applications can be interoperable without the fear of being obsolete in the future. In an obvious observation the dominance of proprietary software has been long experience by most consumers or users, which is why I think the promotion on embracing FOSS is slowly pacing. Not to be biased, I would not say that upon knowing the great benefits that we could get if we use or learn to practice using FOSS I will stop what I have been using from the very beginning, the proprietary ones since honestly it would be hard for me to abruptly “change of heart”. On the contrary, it would be I think a very great experience to be able to contribute in developing open source projects. Being able to share ideas with great minds in the information technology industry would be a great privilege.

Somehow, I think, the advocacy of many developers in promoting FOSS has grown farther. With this observation, it would not be far impossible that sooner or later the dominance of proprietary products in the market will gradually vanish and be replaced by open sourced products. As the saying says “Everything is possible, the impossible just takes longer”.

Time is Gold

hmm.. i could hardly make it. The seminar was participated by different colleges in Davao City. To mention some, University of Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University, Brokenshire College and of course University of Southeastern Philippines.

I was quite enlightened that I had learned something from today’s seminar. It would really be a good practice to use open source software because of its portability and interoperability with many different platforms. Just take as example, the software that they showed to us, Ruby rails, blender, all of them could run in different operating system such as Linux, Mac and windows. I was also encourage to use open source software, when one of the speaker told us that it would be very advantageous for us to find a job if we have our expertise in using open source software since companies will also benefit from us if we use to apply open source application because they don’t have to apply for any license in the software that we are going to use. Hmmm… that was quite amazing huh….

Digital Fortress: Death of Cryptography

Just a moment ago, 1:30 pm to be exact I am done
reading the book entitled digital fortress by Daniel Brown.

The feeling was quite remarkable, I must say.

As of this time, I am currently in the course of readings about cryptology, the study of secret messages. TRANSLATR in the story was the most high-tech ever created machine that could decrypt encrypted algorithms in just few minutes, but not digital fortress; an algorithm, series of codes consisting of a mutation of Strings.

Though the story is fictional, with the technology we have now and a recipe of brilliant ideas from programmers and mathematician, digital fortress is not far impossible.

My Proposal

I have read a statement from Oliver Pell saying.. “ In a world where virtually all data of any importance is held on a computer system the necessity of cryptography cannot be disputed” with this statement I asked “ how??????”.

As I go along with my reading about Oliver Pell’s essay he emphasizes that cryptography is all about increasing the level of privacy of individuals and groups.

Upon reading the whole essay I had formulated some questions and problem statements:

1. How cryptography (this different encryption algorithm) had helped increased the level of privacy of individuals and groups?
Ex. When one is buying products in the internet using their credit card number.
How secure the number is not being intercepted and used against them.

2. determine unto what extent does technology had contributed to make this cryptosystems stronger
3. Know what are those different cryptanalyst attack or “code breaking attacks” and how strong is the defense of this different encryption algorithm against those attacks.
4. What are the vulnerabilities of this different encryption algorithm and cryptanalysis?
5. On how cryptography has been useful to this fields.

In particular the study would deal also with these modern cryptographic features. Based on my readings there are some encryption algorithm that is being used today in different fields of technology, most common are the DES (data encryption standard), AES (advanced encryption standard), RSA ( Rivest-shamir-adleman algorithm), IDEA (International Data Encryption Algorithm). In line with this, I would like to have an in depth study on how this different algorithm performs ciphering, the mathematical operations involve with it.

Also how will this algorithm affect to the speed of performance and determine its level of performance on securing data in the field of networking over the internet, database management, pin codes security (ATM, credit cards), online businesses and any related fields.

Also, vulnerabilities of these algorithms will be of concern. On what are the weaknesses that possibly any code breaking attacks would take an advantage. If certain technology is using such algorithm, how strong is there defense against cryptanalyst?

Just as I Promise

"The Life I dreamed of.. As time goes on and that every one of us had experience lots of obstacles, some of us, if not all had already second thoughts on whether to continue or to shift to other course. But as of now, we are on to the stage of doing a research study in which I am trying to ponder on what is really the role of research in designing my future career? Is it just merely passing the subject and pursue the course?

Lately, as I have been to thinking on what would be my research topic, the first thing that came out into my mind is a question. What is that something that I really want to know more aside from the things that has been taught to us here in the university? (A self centered question but I know would help me a lot in gaining perseverance to do the study) And suddenly an answer came, database system. Since from the very beginning I know from my heart that I really want to dwell on databases though I am having hard time passing my database subjects, I realize that it is good to formulate a topic that would be related to database. My future researches, readings, realizations about my topic would help me a lot if ever in the future I will become a database administrator. Now, I could say that doing a research would play a very big role in conceptualizing our future career.

As an IT what should be my research topic all about?

It is of great advantage for us as an IT student to indulge in research topics that would caught our interest and that would be in relation with our course simply because of the simple reason that it would give us more courage to pursue that study eventhough in future, there would be obstacles that woud challenge the researchers perseverance. For me, perseverance and or courage should have to be the first factor that should have to be considered in doing researches.

And so, those topics most probably i think would be relaed to programming, enhancemet to technology , network and the likes..

state of computer science research and its variety of technical topics

To begin this report, and as far as what I have understood on the ‘task’ given, I would like to first define what computer science is, as defined from a relevant source [1] computer science or computing science is the study and the science of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. If we try to look over the history of computer science and how did it evolve from abacus to digital computers, it would be a big wow! Who would expect that the technology would boom such as what we are enjoying right now. Imagine computer science a decade after or even just a year as for the fact that technology developed and even improved rapidly, hmm..??.

I have read a very wonderful article written by Wm. A. Wulf entitled the state of computer science research in the US and the evolution of federal support for IT. On that article he exemplify[2] how important it is to support researches of computer science and it is very wrong to say that the estate where he belong would refer the funds being released to researches of computing science an expense but should or would rather be INVESTMENT. He added that computer science is an investment with an enormous multiplier because advances in computing and information technology have immediate, direct and tangible benefits on virtually all human activities.

As to relate with the issue being raised by Mr. Wulf to the proper authority where he belong, I would like also to raised my concern on the state of computer science ( information technology) in this country. It is very transparent that the government is not paying that much attention on improving and developing the quality of educating the students or orienting them with the newest technology, though knowing the fact that our country is competing globally. Well, as to add with this, not to go far, I would also like to raised my concern on how the government is not paying that much attention on computing science, just one great example is what we are experiencing right now on our laboratory which I would not further state.

With regards to the researches, it is pretty obvious that there are lots of Filipino computer scientist which are magnificently very good but then are not being supported properly that is why they flew away and try to find that green pasture outside the country. Well, aside from the fact that lots of researches, inventions and developments with regards to technology are first released and broadcast by non-Filipino developers (sad to say ).

Variety of technical topics:
• Computer security
• Computer architecture
• Operating systems
• Programming languages
• Compilers
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_science
[2]http://www.nationalacademies.org/ocga/testimony/Computer_Science_Research_in_the_United_States.asp

A Many Splendored thing

To whom it may concern;

I really doubted if you could care of me- for my unchanging devotion to you.

It may be unknown to you, but I've been secretly loving you for a time already.
